October 30: Stonehearst Asylum. Rating: 5/5. Comment: This movie is based on a story by Edgar Allan Poe, which was probably the original “lunatics running the asylum” tale. The worst part about this movie, for me, is the realization that many of the medical practices depicted in this 1899 period piece were probably based on fact. The second worst part was the treatment of women — both inmates and nursing staff — which was also probably grounded in truth. Our world has come a long way. As a little incentive to watch this one, let me inform you that if my doctor looked like the one in this movie, I’d check myself into Stonehearst and never, ever leave. They’d release me, and I’d break my own leg to stay. You dig?
Peace and love.
